In Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Central Valley CA
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. So today I want, and need, to talk a little bit about the honor of photographing a family that is dealing first hand with breast cancer. It’s always an honor when a family trusts me with their most precious items; each other. To be able to learn a family’s history, hear their stories and share in their memories is honestly the main reason I am a photographer. When that family is going through a major health crisis, I am truly humbled to take their pictures.
Such was the case with the Biedermann’s. Alicia Biedermann, an active and otherwise healthy 37-year old wife, and mom of three, is fighting a non-hereditary breast cancer. After the initial shock and fear of her diagnosis, Alicia took action by creating a website and blog, https://www.her2andyou.com/, designed to help other women trying to find information about their breast cancer, as she was. My admiration for this woman and her strength is immense.
While family is always important, when faced with the fear of losing them, I think its human nature to place that level of importance a little higher than it may have been. Family photos that might have been put off because of work or other time constraints, tend to have more urgency and more meaning. After consulting with Alicia, we came up with a plan of action for her family’s photo session. The result are beautiful images of the entire family, of Alicia and her husband Scott, and of each of the parents with the three children as well as one-on-one with each child. Alicia chose to include some of these images in an article she recently wrote for Discover Ripon, a local magazine in the Central Valley. I can't think of a better time to share them than now, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
When I look at the photos of the Biedermann’s I am filled with gratitude that I was allowed the privilege of photographing them. This is truly the honor of photography. I hope when Alicia and her family looks at them, they too are filled with gratitude for the beautiful family they created.
